Home Court

Sophomores Ella Mohr and Suzetta Fuller cover one of the UofL women’s volleyball team’s recent wins at the KFC Yum! Center.

Bright red lights shined across the stadium, reflecting on the faces of players and fans. The crowd roared with the deafening noise of claps and cheers as “Point – Cards!” flashes across the YUM! Center screens. Feeding off the energy, smiling players high fived each other on the court below us.

On September 15, UofL women’s volleyball beat Creighton, winning three of the five total sets. The final score was 25-18, 25-20, 10-25, 15-25, 8-15.

Hitter Anna DeBeer partially credited Louisville’s win to the environment at the YUM! Center today. Even though the Cards lost some momentum in the third and fourth sets, they were able to fight back and win.

“Obviously, you wanna play at home, there’s just an advantage,” DeBeer said. “You really can feel the environment, you feel like this team and the fans are always on your side. It just really makes everything flow, and volleyball is a game of momentum so if you can have that momentum on your side…”

DeBeer also noted how the team feels more comfortable when they play at their home courts, either the YUM center or the L&N arena.

“We have a lot of games at home so you feel very in routine, in rhythm and it just makes it easy because sometimes when you’re going to different places, there’s different gyms, different lighting, different perception. There’s a lot of things that you have to take into consideration, but when we’re at home you’re in a comfortable environment,” DeBeer said.

UofL volleyball has their next home game at the L&N arena against Wake Forest on October 18.
