As Halloween inches closer, the perfect spooky playlist is a must. For me, Halloween is the best time of the year. Whether it be a Halloween party soundtrack, or for some songs to play while you are putting up decorations, music is always a need to get you into that autumn feel. These top five songs are my favorite classics for this coming October 31st.
“Thriller” by Michael Jackson
This song is by far my favorite Halloween song there is. It is a classic and no one can tell me otherwise. From the beginning notes, to the iconic dance break in the middle of the music video, to the laughter at the end, this song is the definition of “Halloween soundtrack.” Don’t even get me started on the beat in relation to the lyrics. As soon as I hear all of the song’s elements together, my mind immediately transports me to memories of walking down my neighborhood sidewalk on a cold, dark, fall night while looking at the Jack O’Lanterns and other decorations glow around me.
“Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and The Crypt-Kickers
One of the earliest memories I have is walking downstairs when my oldest sister was having a Halloween party and hearing this song playing in the background. Though it might sound silly, this song makes me want to get up and dance every time it plays. I sing this song year round, always triggering the memories of trick or treating when I was younger. This song has so much nostalgia, especially with its references to so many classic Halloween characters. There’s no way someone could resist playing this every year.
“Calling All the Monsters” by China Anne McClain
I don’t know if it’s because the singer is one of my childhood favorite TV stars or if this is just an amazing song, but this is a strong contender for best Halloween song. I first heard the song in Season 1, Episode 14 of A.N.T. Farm, and the scene when China breaks out into song and dance during this Halloween special gets me every time. I can still picture her transformation from human to Medusa once the music ends, and let me tell you, as a child, I was in awe.
“Ghostbusters” – Ray Parker Jr.
From the moment I first watched the Ghostbusters movie with my father, I was hooked. The beat and catchy lyrics of this song just spark a feeling of nostalgia. Everyone knows this one. Once this song gets into your head, it will never leave.
“This is Halloween” – The Nightmare Before Christmas
Now, this one might be a little controversial, as some people think this movie is a Christmas movie. However, this song is definitely needed during the Halloween season. I mean, come on, it has it in the name. The intro of this song specifically does it for me. As soon as I hear it I know exactly what is going to be played and I’m transferred directly to Halloween night. This whole movie is a childhood classic, so listening to this song brings back childhood characters, while also preparing you for Halloween night.
