Located on Frankfort Avenue, Cafe Kiwa stands out as one of Louisville’s most aesthetically pleasing and delicious Korean cafes. Walking in, the minimal design and inviting cozy vibes are pleasantly surprising. Their high white walls create a gallery-like ambiance that’s perfect for Instagram. Does the food and drink measure up to the aesthetic? In Kiwa’s case – yes!
Their menu offers a variety of coffee and tea options, along with dessert and weekend-exclusive brunch. In addition to their standing menu, Cafe Kiwa also offers a seasonal menu, with halloween-themed drinks at my visit. Since my friend and I aren’t big coffee enjoyers, we explored the unique Korean tea options offered instead. My friend ordered the Yang Yang Moonlight, a black tea infused with homemade pear syrups. I opted for something sweeter: the Passion Fruit Refresh, a drink described as sweet, citrusy and fruity. Kiwa also gives the option to order the drinks hot or cold — we both chose cold.
My friend’s drink arrived first, served on a wooden tray with a small tea kettle on the side. Although she found it a bit bitter for her taste, she noted that the tea would appeal to those who enjoy less sweet drinks. My drink was served next. It had a beautiful ombre effect to it, with small passion fruit seeds floating about in the cup. After mixing the syrup at the bottom, I took a sip and was surprised by the strong carbonation. The sparkling water base they added to the syrup gave the unique drink a refreshing taste, though it somewhat overpowered the passionfruit.
We also tried the Matcha Chocolate Muffin, which ended up being our favorite. The outer layer of chocolate had a crispy texture, topped with teddy-bear grahams, while the warm, crumbly matcha inside was soft and balanced. The muffin had just the right amount of sweetness.
With its relaxing jazz music, refined atmosphere, and thoughtfully crafted menu, Cafe Kiwa is a great spot to study, catch up with a friend, or simply unwind.
