This is the third Monday of Black History Month, so I find it appropriate to share my favorite songs from Black artists. Spanning across decades and genres Black music is diverse and amazing.
“Almeda” by Solange
The song title is a double entendre of location. Almeda is an area of Houston that Solange was born in, as well as the courthouse where the Black Panthers marched in support of Huey Newton. Both meanings fit the song perfectly due to the fact that the lyrics draw roots to Black and Southern Black culture.
“Shake Back” by Kodak Black
This is my favorite song to listen to when I’m trying to hype myself up, whether that be when I’m working out at the gym, before cheerleading a game or getting ready for an event. This rap song is perfect for a mood boost!
“It Ain’t Over ‘til It’s Over” by Lenny Kravitz
This song has it all when it comes to what I look for in music: amazing guitar riffs, an optimistic message in lyrics and a great singer in Kravitz. This song is great for a summer night drive but right now, in the dead of winter, I listen to it on my way to school in the morning.
“Cobra” by Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion is hands down my favorite rapper and high on the list of my favorite artists. This song once again has an amazing backing guitar, causing the song to be misleadingly upbeat. When you listen to the lyrics instead of just the beat you hear about Megan’s hardships in life. This song is what truly got me into her discography, so it remains in my top favorites.
“A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
The notorious Black inspiration song, Cooke was truly a gift to music for his voice and compositions. I’ve never come across someone who doesn’t appreciate the song and I doubt I ever will.
