The walk down the street to get to Butchertown Grocery Bakery is deceiving, because once we stepped inside there was an instant shift from busy and urban concrete to a rustic and woodsy atmosphere. Inside, a low table lined the large windows on two of the walls, complete with large, laid-back leather chairs, perfect for studying, which two people were utilizing when we – the marketing team – walked in. Everything inside coordinated with the rustic theme: dark wood surfaces, leather chairs, hide pillows, the chalkboard menu and the cozy dim lighting. As we approached the back table to order, we were met with an array of fresh desserts. A pitcher provided free water to all customers, along with some samples of biscotti. The barista we met kindly took our orders after we reviewed their extensive beverage and meal menu, and we received our drinks almost immediately. We then took seats in the comfortable chairs lining the windows, which perfected the relaxing atmosphere.

I ordered the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich ($14.95), but took off the bacon and ranch, and got it with a side of regular Zapp’s kettle chips. Long story short, it was a delicious sandwich. I’d never had chipotle chicken before today, so I was excited to try it. It had a great flavor, similar to turkey, but with a slight kick to it. The toasted ciabatta bread was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and it pulled the whole sandwich together really well. The Chocolate Chunk Cookie ($4) looked too good to resist, so I ordered it alongside my sandwich. Thankfully, it tasted just as good as it looked, if not better, and it was honestly one of the best chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever tasted. After today, I would 1000% recommend checking out Butchertown Grocery Bakery. They have a diverse menu across breakfast, lunch, and dessert, so you’re bound to find something you like, and the food all tastes incredibly fresh. Definitely pay it a visit next time you find yourself near the East Market District!

I got the Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwich ($13.95) and it was very good. It had ham, smoked cheddar cheese, aioli sauce on top and a side of fried pickles in a pretzel bun. Not only was this dish savory and salty, everything I was craving on a Wednesday afternoon, but the sauce had a spicy kick to it! I had the option between chips and a cookie as a side and I picked a chocolate chunk cookie to sweeten up my savory dish – it was the right choice! I have been to Butchertown Grocery before and got a breakfast sausage scone, so it was nice to try another dish with more flavors to it. I 100% recommend the Hot Ham & Cheese Sandwich, it is the perfect mix of cheesy, salty, and rich!

I ordered an iced vanilla latte ($4.75), one of my go-tos, and it may have been the best one I have ever had. It was very rich and had more of a dark coffee flavor to it, while most other lattes I have tend to be on the sweeter side. It was absolutely delicious, I highly recommend it if you enjoy a richer flavor in your coffee. I also felt like it really matched the overall vibes of the cafe itself, which felt dark, cozy, and relaxing. Butchertown Grocery Bakery also utilizes cups and straws made out of entirely recycled plastic, which is a major plus if you are being environmentally conscious. I’m excited to go back and study there.

I ordered an iced caramel latte ($4.75) and the Chipotle Chicken Sandwich ($14.95) with a side of Zapp’s regular kettle chips. The latte was such a unique blend of coffee. It was the perfect blend of dark roast and sweetness. While it was more bitter than standard lattes, the caramel balanced it out perfectly. The sandwich was easily one of the best I’ve had in Louisville. The flavor of the chicken had a hint of spice, and the freshness of the lettuce and cucumber really pulled it fully together. The entire meal as a whole was extremely filling and definitely worth the price. I would wholeheartedly recommend stopping by Butchertown Grocery and Bakery. There is something for everyone on their menu, and even if you’re not hungry, it’s a really cool spot to study or hang out. From the upbeat music to the comfy couch-like chairs, the ambiance adds to the experience and is definitely a reason why I’ll be going back.
Overall, the Ad Team would highly recommend Butchertown Grocery Bakery for lunch or a nice study afternoon. You can also find a copy of On The Record’s Fall/Winter 2024 edition, Up To Us, at this location!

Anther great review Frances! I found your description of the flavor profile very well developed and intriguing. Further, I liked the contrast you drew between this visit and your prior ones. Consider me sold on Butchertown Grocery and a future regular there!
