1960s: “Lilac Wine” by Nina Simone
Despite the many other covers of James Shelton’s “Lilac Wine,” Nina Simone’s version will forever have a place in my heart. The steady and pulsing rhythm of the piano combined with the strength of her voice shows not only her vocal talent but her production talent as well. Listening to this song once is just not enough for me.
1970s: “Gold Dust Woman” by Fleetwood Mac
No matter how deep I dive into Fleetwood Mac’s discography, I always find myself coming back to Gold Dust Woman. Though Fleetwood Mac is a group made up of mostly men, Stevie Nicks’ unique voice and songwriting style made me fall in love with their music even more. I also partially credit my mom for my love for Fleetwood Mac; every time I hear the hypnotizing guitar riffs of this song, I think of late night car rides with just me and her.
1990s: “Doo Wop (That Thing)” Lauryn Hill
My favorite thing about this song is its ability to relate with so many different women around the world. A classic that everyone knows and loves, Doo Wop (That Thing), is a staple song on Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” The upbeat nature of this song mixed with the symbolic lyrics make it perfect for any mood.
2000s: “Maneater” by Nelly Furtado
The first time I discovered this song was during a seventh grade dance show, and I immediately fell in love. I don’t know if it’s the song’s relevance in pop culture or the overall fun vibes, but I could easily listen to “Maneater” on repeat. This is the kind of song where it’s impossible to not dance, tap your feet or sing along when it comes on.
2010s: “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj
Most people can probably agree with me when I say I know EVERY lyric to this song. When I hear this song I think of my childhood, bright colors and YouTube dance compilations. Despite Nicki Minaj’s reign through multiple eras, her influence on the 2010s music scene is undeniable. If you’re looking for nostalgia or just a song to rap along to, then I would recommend revisiting “Super Bass.”
