Growing up, my dad filled the house with heavy metal and punk rock.
As a kid, I didn’t love it, it just sounded like noise. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve connected with that music more and more. Now, I’ve embraced those loud, raw sounds, adding my feminine twist to my dad’s style that helps me channel my anger in the best way. Here are some of my favorite songs to listen to when I am mad.
“Nice Nice” by Dazey and the Scouts
I stumbled upon Dazey and the Scouts during my freshman year, and from the moment I hit play, I was hooked. Every track on their album “Maggot” hits, but “Nice Nice” stands out the most. There’s something raw and unapologetic about it. I especially love the chaotic energy, the gritty vocals, the build-up that feels like a scream bottled up for too long. When I’m angry, this track doesn’t just match my mood, it amplifies it, then helps me let it go.
“No Respect” by Destroy Boys
This track is pure fire from the first chord. The guitar in “No Respect” radiates with energy; it’s sharp, emotional, and perfectly unhinged in the best way. It elevates the vocals, turning the entire song into a bold, cathartic anthem. You can feel the frustration and defiance in every lyric. It’s one of those songs that makes you want to scream along, not just because it sounds good, but because it feels good. I absolutely love this one.
“Weird Girl” by Mommy Long Legs
This song captures what it feels like to be a teenage girl better than most, caught between wanting to be unapologetically yourself and feeling the pressure to shrink or conform. “Weird Girl” is messy, honest and completely relatable. The scratchy vocals bring a rawness that makes every lyric hit harder. It’s not polished, and that’s exactly what makes it perfect. There’s power in the chaos, and I can’t get enough of it.
“Groan” by Dazey and the Scouts
Another standout from Daisy and the Scouts, “Groan” comes in fast and doesn’t let up. The tempo is quicker, the energy sharper, and I love everything about it, including the punchy instrumentals and the gritty, expressive vocals. It’s chaotic in the most intentional way, like it’s daring you to keep up. This track feels like motion, like letting your anger out through movement. One of my go-tos when I need to feel something loud.
