The month of October has finally arrived, bringing with it not only a change in leaves but in the soundtracks of the season. Days are shorter, and fall is in full swing. The vibrant pop songs of summer are now being replaced with the sound of the minor-key melodies of autumn. Here are my go-to songs to keep me happy and chill during this fall season.
“The View Between Villages,” by Noah Kahan
Noah Kahan is one of my favorite artists, but this song in particular has stuck with me this year. Starting to drive and tour colleges is just a reminder that we’re growing up. This song not only symbolizes growing up but the changing of life, and since the seasons are changing, this has been a go-to song of mine.
“Kids in the Corner,” by Amber Van Day
Fall isn’t just a time to get cozy and throw a sweater on — it also means back-to-school season. Expressing yourself, especially in school, is a scary thing. “Kids in the Corner” is an empowerment song that exudes open and welcoming outlooks on change. As seasons change and school comes into full swing, I love blasting this song after a rough day to lift my spirits. It’s an amazing song to get you into a positive mindset for the arrival of autumn.
“Ivy,” by Taylor Swift
To me, all of Evermore is basically one big fall album, but “Ivy” in particular is a real symbol of fall. It’s about resilience and the cycle of birth and death — and what relates more to the change from bright, vibrant summer to mellow earth tones of fall? It really highlights the beauty seen in changes in nature and even how death can lead to the next beautiful thing. Even when leaves change and fall, they’ll be back next year, better than before. And it’s always been such a cozy song.
“Pulling Leaves Off Trees,” by Wallows
Wallows are an amazing band, and this song in particular is a favorite on my fall playlist because it embraces change and both the positives and negatives that come with it. The message of growing and changing through choices and circumstances throughout the song is always inspiring — it helps me look forward to what’s ahead.
“Gloria,” by The Lumineers
The Lumineers are just such a fall band, in my opinion. The vibes of most of their best songs are really indie and have that great sound, but this one especially adds to the message of things coming to an end and starting new, as well as the struggles of that. Fall is here, and summer is gone, but that doesn’t mean the season is any less beautiful or fun.
