As February approaches, slowly but surely, Valentine’s Day, Homecoming, and Prom are nearing the corner. Love might slowly be filling the air, but so are the 80s. No decade has since surpassed the 80s, specifically in the love music genre, and their songs remain iconic and legendary in the history of music. These tracks are not just about love but also a reminder of how important we are to one another and that we all experience love, tragedy, and pain. So if you want to experience the next few weeks as if you were a kid falling in love in the 80s, give these songs a listen!
“Against All Odds” – Phil Collins
This song reflects Phil Collins’s real life, in which he and his wife had divorced prior to the song. The themes in this song are sure to be relatable to many, including the journey of trying to win back a love that might end forever, but despite that, still trying.
“Faithfully” – Journey
I love the idea that love overcomes anything and this song embodies it. The intro is beautiful and slowly builds up to an incredible listen. Themes of persistence, endurance, and faith make this song an emotional one, but also impactful. “Two strangers learn to fall in love again. I get the joy of rediscovering you” is my favorite part of the song because despite challenges and obstacles, love conquers and you learn even more about yourself and others.
“Take My Breath Away” – Berlin
If you have ever seen the movie “Top Gun” then you would understand why this song is on this list. But despite the movie, this song is fascinating. The drums and synthesizer work together and create a sound that just inspires awe and beauty. The song is about desire, affection, and also the possibility of heartbreak. Any time this song comes on, I all of a sudden feel as if I’m Tom Cruise in Top Gun.
“Purple Rain” – Prince
Prince was about as iconic as any artist during the 80s. This song is timeless, perfect, and beautiful. I once tried to learn the chords and sets on the guitar, but eventually gave up trying. Very strong themes and imagery of an end of the world scenario, in which love and faith are the answers. The “purple rain” is meant to be blue tears and red blood mixing together to symbolize emotion. Any person in any social setting will enjoy this song.
“Heaven” – Bryan Adams
The vocals of Bryan Adams are unmatched and really show the emotion and passion in the song. This song is all about a love that “makes the world disappear” and feels as if “in heaven”. Without a doubt the best Bryan Adams song and most definitely one of the best 80s love songs.
