Although I’m not a fan of freezing winters, waking up to the brightness of snow seeping through my windows always puts me in a good mood. Whether I’m out shoveling or playing in the snow, or enjoying the scene from the warmth of my living room, these are my favorite songs to set the mood.
Simulation Swarm by Big Thief
From the first few strums of the guitar, “Simulation Swarm” immediately puts me at ease. Adrienne Lenker’s calming yet reflective lyricism and the band’s unique musical style make it not just my favorite song on the album, but a perfect soundtrack to a cool snow-filled morning.
Tin Man by America
America has long been my favorite band from the 70s, and they are my go-to for long car rides. Where Big Thief’s guitar provides a constant sense of calm, “Tin Man” explores the more hopeful, upbeat side of the instrument. Plus, I always love a good “Wizard of Oz” reference, especially with snow falling outside like the famous poppy field scene.
Heavy by The Marias
The Maria’s had a breakout year in 2025, and from their many hits, “Heavy” has been on repeat for months. Though perfect for relaxing with a book or drifting off to sleep, now, its warm, percussive beat is just what I need to mellow out after shoveling a sidewalk or a neighbor’s driveway.
Two Doors Down by Harriet Dagnall
The first time I heard this song was back in November, when an early snow took us out of school. Harriet Dagnall’s crystalline voice and spry lyrics cut through any dull moment, and it has since become my first choice whenever snow starts to fall. Though she’s only released eight songs so far, each has carried the same light quality, and I’m sure to add her next releases to my winter queue soon.
Slow Dance by Clairo
Clairo’s music has been a staple to any playlist of mine for years, but I haven’t taken the time to truly appreciate her newest album “Charm” until recently. With her soft voice and addictive piano-drum combo, “Slow Dance” personifies a wintry day off, and I can’t help but sing along and turn the volume all the way up anytime it plays.
