As a hint to one of our stories going in the magazine for our spring semester, here are 4 songs that set the mood for Churchill Downs racing season coming in April.
Wild Horses, The Rolling Stones
Yes, this song is literally about horses, but it reminds me of warm weather and simple times. I’ve always loved this song, and many other songs by The Rolling Stones, but hearing it again in the most recent season of The Summer I Turned Pretty reintroduced me to how amazing it truly is.Â
Heaven Sent, The SteelDrivers
The feel-good lyrics and vibe of this song perfectly encapsulate how it feels to land a winning bet at the track during racing season. The lead vocals from Chris Stapleton have great energy. In my opinion, any song sung by Chris Stapleton is a good song.
Southern Nights, Glen Campbell
This cover of Southern Nights by Allen Touissant has a great melody that sums up the vibe surrounding Southern horse racing. Playing this song on weekend nights with the people you love is a great feeling.Â
Into the Mystic, Van Morrison
What really draws me to this song is its overall vibe. While it has zero literal connection to racing and the track, the carefree elements of the song remind me of horses running free.
